I performed in 2 shows as Prof H2O about water. The local plumbing and bathrooms firm called Potter Perrin also sponsored a competition for children to design a musical instrument out of plumbing. Many designs were drawn by children during the day with accompanying notes. The 1st prize for the best design is the 'plumbing drumming' instrument that I made specially for this occasion shown above, it can be played with metal or wooden drum sticks. The winner was Rachel Mead for her wonderful design of a bath with different length pipes attached.

ANOTHER SCHOOL MUSIC PROJECT:
I have created another musical installation of a set of tuned drainpipes for St Luke's School in Bournemouth as part of their Arts Week in May 2009. They had probably been up all night hunting. Incredibly they didn't notice me arrive, so I took a couple of photos from where I was (about 75 yds) and then dropped down to the ground to crawl along army commando style under the arch of the stinging nettles and brambles until I was only 25 yards away. They still hadn't noticed me. I took about 30 photos over the next 10 minutes. I am fairly sure the male is on the right and the female is on the left. At one point they did seem to realise that something different was looking at them from the ground, which concentrated their look in my direction, but eventually they seemed to accept me. I finally managed to reverse crawl back the way I had come and they never even realised the whole photographic session had taken place. What a treat, I was so privileged to get that close and be undetected. My T-shirt was soaked with dew and stained with grass and dirt, but it was brilliant.

The 3 photos below are close ups of the better shots.

These have now been made into greetings cards that I am selling, 20% of which is being donated to Dorset Wildlife Trust.

This is the press release that went out after my last show about water for 200 children at Marine Theatre Lyme Regis:

Prof H20 Whets the Children’s Appetite for more Theatre.

Outside and inside were full of Watery Notes on Thursday 5 July when Prof H20 brought his comical show to the Marine Theatre.

All the older children from St Michaels’s Primary School and Mrs. Ethelstones Primary braved the wind and rain for an hour of fun facts from the Prof. Pecorama had sponsored the fact filled show for the young people of Lyme, and Phil Lawlor from Pecorama was in the audience and thanked very warmly by John Bartholomew, the LymeArts Community Trust Chairman. It was organised by Making Space on behalf of Creative Partnership Hampshire. The brief was to make instruments that could be suspended from an existing pergola in the grounds for the children to play with supervision. We had a great time. They look great.
Here are some photos of the finished instruments, dustbin drums, saucepan bongos, tuned drainpipes, copper tubular bells, water tank basses, ballcock maracas and bottle top frame shakers.
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_QBMVV1jsMkI/RrTbzKLPAkI/AAAAAAAAABs/dnBx5wk4oW0/s400/0.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5094938750414160450" />
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_QBMVV1jsMkI/RrTbzqLPAlI/AAAAAAAAAB0/kn8M15ddcn8/s400/0.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5094938759004095058" />
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_QBMVV1jsMkI/RrTbz6LPAmI/AAAAAAAAAB8/y9Lv-4r_LFk/s400/1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5094938763299062370" />
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_QBMVV1jsMkI/RrTb0KLPAnI/AAAAAAAAACE/Zacl50FDCeU/s400/2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5094938767594029682" />
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_QBMVV1jsMkI/RrTb0aLPAoI/AAAAAAAAACM/PgRY5kCiFGs/s400/3.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5094938771888996994" />

Water festivals are catching on (originally started by Common Ground in 2000), I have been doing the Hampshire Water Festival for 4 years and now Sussex and Somerset as well. These performance workshops are demonstrating my musical plumbing and letting the public have a go.
Here are a couple of photos taken by Joe Low (professional photographer) at the Andover Water festival this July 2007. The first is letting the girl try to get a sound from the 'crumpled horn' and the second is the 'water tank bass' being tried with a little help from myself. The coil of the 'crumpled horn' is in the fore ground and the bath harp is to the side waiting it's turn to be played.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_QBMVV1jsMkI/RqN9hqLPAbI/AAAAAAAAAAk/B-hzPE7PD00/s400/Water+Festival,%E2%80%A6-07-07)+594.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5090050021069357490" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_QBMVV1jsMkI/RqN9h6LPAcI/AAAAAAAAAAs/6_FG-2iW8AA/s400/Water+Festival,%E2%80%A6-07-07)+610.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5090050025364324802" />

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_QBMVV1jsMkI/RkWOQT4HiRI/AAAAAAAAAAM/rsD_6MekQa0/s400/0.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5063609766912690450" />

Shaftesbury School booked me to do two educational music talk/performances with all my instruments for 100+ children in March 2007. Compare with earlier photo in this blog site.
The new growth is about 1.5-2.00metres. You may notice the brambles are sprouting up through, when I have time I will dig them out. This project was initiated by the school who applied for funds from LTL (educational charity called Learning Through Landscapes) to add several new features to their grounds: 1) willow sculpture, 2) activity trail and 3) a music garden. I met with the school council back in April and we discussed what they would like and the layout. I came up with a design and finally built it over 2 days last week (6/7/July). The children helped by painting the tuned drainpipes and making the padded bats to play them (the coloured long tubes in photo) and the making the drum sticks for the saucepan bongos (lefthandside in the photo). The ballcock maracas were filled and decorated by the children. The tubular bells completes the range of instruments. The children decided on this layout so that the conductor would stand in the opening (left corner on photo) in order to see and direct all the players who stand on the outer edge of all the instruments. First reactions to the completed project were very positive and with care it will give them many years of fun. This fun and creative music garden is on a 5 metre square of bark and wood chips.

Over the last few years a have been involved with many educational projects in connection with my musical antics. The success of these was usually reinforced by lots of 'thank you' letters from the children and staff that I had worked with. Last October I was in Bournemouth at Townsend School making instruments and also with families at Bournemouth Community Centre for Arts, as it was funded by Bournemouth Adult Wider Learning there were evaluation sheets to be filled in by the participants.
Evaluation:
6024FL
BCCA
1000-1200
Make a Musical Instrument
Nick Crump
15.10.05.

6 adults; & 8 children (2 x 3 year olds; 6 Primary)

•The children had a fantastic time and made great instruments. The grown ups enjoyed it too.
•Fantastic choice. Children loved it and learnt lots of new skills.
•I thought that was super. All the right equipment, Nick. I enjoyed it a lot and a lot, from Jodie.
•It was really really fun. (Stan aged 5)
•Great equipment and materials. Brilliant to be able to let the kids get stuck in without worrying about the mess or noise!! Thanks Nick. Fab centre and very helpful staff. (Sarah Rice)
•Jodie and myself have had a fantastic morning making instruments. Very inventive, very interesting and fun. Thanks! Enjoyed as much by Mum as daughter!

5 adults; & 10 children (2 x 3 year olds; 8 Primary)
•Incredible!!! Highly recommended. A fantastic afternoon. (Carol, Ron, Rosie Millen)
•Absolutely fantastic. An ideal way to spend a Saturday. Will certainly take all the ideas away with me. Cameron loves to be creative and he enjoys being around tools!!! Wonderful that his younger sister was able to be part of all and join in. I think you should do party events. (Venita)
•Leah thought it was very good and enjoyed herself. Matthew enjoyed the lesson as well. I thought it was good and safe. (Russell Miles)
•Thank you for a great workshop. Bethany and Emily have had lots of fun exploring all the different materials! I would love to hear about other workshops. (Alison Cox)

Well it is nice to get a compliment.

So I have been asked back to do some more workshops for the Open Day for Family Learning at BCCA on 25th March.

Meanwhile I have learnt more about the TV filming that Seoul Broadcasting Station want to make about me.
The programme features unusual or unique people to be shown in South Korea as a light hearted documentary. 'Fly on the wall, follow you round for a couple of days' set up.
Probably to be done in March. I will keep you posted.

I don't know how many of you, if anyone, is reading my blog.
But here are some photos of my latest activity that is nothing to do with music, one of my other hidden talents (among others), is HEDGE LAYING.
It is one of the MOST satisfying solo activity jobs that I know, I love doing it. With the physical nature of the work and a continuous fire in the background, you can keep warm. The constant decision making of which wood to remove, thick log size, bent or straggly stems, harvesting some bean poles and of course the pieces you want to lay. The weaving into a solid barrier so that each piece is under tension in its place makes it very creative and the trimming up to look good and rounded all add up to be very rewarding when you look back at the job. Plus all the tidying up of the trimmings and stoking the fire.
These are some photos of my work in progress, this style is called the Dorset half round and the hedge is an old boundary hazel hedge.
I would very happily hedge lay for all the quieter winter months.

I have recently been commissioned to make a monochord for Welsh National Opera. This is an instrument that was popular 500 BC and played by Pythagorus, he saw great significance in the mathematical proportions of the played string. He named notes 4ths, 5ths and 3rds and we still use these terms today. It is essentially a stringed soundbox. The key component on the monochord is the moveable bridge. The instrument I have just made is the superior 2 string version giving one resonator (sympathetic) and one played string which is either plucked or bowed. The WNO are using the monochord in a show to be performed next year with specially composed music by Karen Wimhurst for children about the life of Pythagorus. There are some pics here to see it. A pick-up microphone has been built into the monochord as it will need to be amplified for a big stage. The apple in the photo gives a sense of scale.
